The best winter sun swimwear for a family is UPF50+ long-sleeved swimwear for the children, a rash guard and a good pair of swim shorts for the adults, and two sets per person so nothing has to go on wet. Winter sun destinations sit close to the equator, where UV stays high all year, so pack for protection first and the photos second. If the whole family can match while doing it, so much the better.
The diary is about to fill up. Singapore's Ministry of Education year-end school holidays run from 21 November to 31 December 2026. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November in the US. The Caribbean's peak season gets going as soon as the Atlantic hurricane season officially closes on 30 November. And somewhere in a group chat, someone is already asking whether the Maldives is "too much" for a four-year-old. (It is not. Ask the four-year-old.)
Here is how to pack the swimwear half of the suitcase properly.
When does winter sun season start for families?
Earlier than most people book. The window opens in late November and runs well into spring, and the best rooms at family-friendly resorts go first. The key dates for 2026:
| Moment | Dates | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore school year-end holidays | 21 Nov to 31 Dec 2026 (MOE) | Bali, Phuket, the Maldives, Australia |
| US Thanksgiving | Thursday 26 Nov 2026 | Florida, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Mexico |
| End of Atlantic hurricane season | 30 Nov (NOAA) | Caribbean peak season begins |
| Christmas and New Year | Late Dec to early Jan | Everywhere warm, and everywhere busy |
| Maldives drier season | Roughly Dec to Apr | Calmer seas, snorkelling, small swimmers |
Travel demand is not slowing down either. AAA projected a record of nearly 82 million Americans travelling over Thanksgiving in 2025, so if you are flying anywhere sunny over the holiday, assume everyone else had the same idea.
Why is winter sun harder on skin than it feels?
Because your body thinks it is December and the sun does not care. Winter sun destinations are popular precisely because they sit in the tropics, where the sun is high overhead for most of the year. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology notes that the most intense UV is found when the sun is directly overhead, and that dry sand can increase your UV exposure by around 20 percent and water by around 10 percent. A beach is, in other words, a very pleasant reflector.
The World Health Organization advises sun protection whenever the UV Index reaches 3 or above. On a tropical beach at midday, you will usually be well past that. Add children who refuse to come out of the water and sunscreen that washes off faster than you can reapply it, and the case for covering up becomes fairly obvious.
This is where fabric does the heavy lifting. The Skin Cancer Foundation explains that a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays. It also points out that an ordinary wet T-shirt can drop to a UPF of around 3, which is why the old "just put a T-shirt on him" approach mostly protects your conscience.
What swimwear should you pack for a winter beach holiday with kids?
Think in layers of coverage rather than in outfits. A sensible family kit looks like this:
- Babies and toddlers: a long-sleeved baby swimsuit or full-coverage body suit, plus a reusable swim diaper. Fewer gaps means fewer places to miss with the sunscreen.
- Girls: a long-sleeved swimsuit for the hours in the sea, and something lighter for the pool once the sun drops.
- Boys: a kids' rash guard worn over swim shorts. The rash guard does the protecting; the shorts do the looking good.
- Women: a one piece or bikini for the lounger and a women's rash guard or surf suit for snorkelling, paddleboarding and anything that involves an hour face down over a reef.
- Men: two pairs of swim shorts and a rash guard. Yes, you. Your shoulders are not as resilient as you think.
- Everyone: a sun hat, a poncho towel for the changing-on-the-beach moment, and a wet/dry bag so damp swimwear does not ruin the rest of the suitcase.
Every piece of Sandbar swimwear is UPF50+, swim shorts included, and the long-sleeved styles cover the shoulders, back and arms, which are the places that burn first and get noticed last.
How many swimsuits does each person need for a week?
Two, minimum. Three if you have a child who treats every puddle as an open invitation. Swimwear that goes back on damp is uncomfortable, takes longer to dry on the body and tends to come out of the suitcase smelling faintly of regret. Rotating two sets means one is always drying while the other is in use.
The useful trick for families is to pack in pairs that work together. If the children's long-sleeved suits and the adults' shorts or one pieces share a print, the second set can be a contrast, and every combination still looks deliberate in photos. Which brings us to the question people pretend not to care about.
Is matching family swimwear worth it?
On holiday, yes. It solves three practical problems at once: you can spot your children instantly on a crowded beach, the photos look intentional rather than accidental, and nobody argues about what to wear because the decision has already been made.
The difference between matching that looks charming and matching that looks like a team-building exercise is the print. Sandbar prints are designed across the whole family from the start, from baby sizes up to adults, so the motif on a toddler's body suit is the same one on a parent's swim shorts, not a loose approximation. Good taste runs in the family, after all. Browse full family matching sets, or start with a print that suits the destination: the Maldives Blue Turtle range feels right for reef holidays, and the Bird of Paradise range was made for Caribbean colour.
For the adults who like their matching a little quieter, the embroidered pieces are the answer. Our men's embroidered and tailored swim shorts are made from allover embroidered fabric, with motifs machine-embroidered into the cloth before it is cut, not printed on top. The texture is visible from across a pool deck, and the Embroidered Turtle Mens Swim Shorts come with a matching boys' version. Men's and boys' shorts are woven from non-stretch REPREVE recycled polyester, so they hold a tailored shape rather than clinging when wet, and like all our swimwear they are UPF50+.
What makes holiday swimwear sustainable, rather than just labelled that way?
There are two questions worth asking: what is it made from, and what happens because you bought it.
On materials, every Sandbar piece is made from recycled fibres. Our swim shorts use REPREVE recycled polyester, made from recycled plastic bottles. Our women's swimwear is made from recycled nylon. You can read more on our sustainable swimwear page.
On impact, for every item sold we fund the removal of 1kg of ocean plastic through our partners Seven Clean Seas and Tidy Ocean. Both employ local teams in Southeast Asia and South and Central America who recover plastic from rivers, mangroves and shorelines before it reaches open water. That means the programme supports local communities and livelihoods as well as removing plastic. It matters because the problem is growing: the UN Environment Programme's From Pollution to Solution report projects that, without action, 23 to 37 million tonnes of plastic waste could enter the ocean every year by 2040. You can follow our running total on the Ocean Impact page.
There is something pleasingly circular about it. The beaches you are flying to are, in many cases, the ones those teams are working to keep clean.
Frequently asked questions
Do children need UPF swimwear in winter?
If the destination is tropical, yes. Winter at home makes no difference to UV levels near the equator, and the WHO recommends sun protection whenever the UV Index reaches 3 or above. Long-sleeved UPF50+ swimwear covers the areas sunscreen most often misses.
What does UPF50+ mean?
UPF measures how much UV radiation passes through a fabric. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays. All Sandbar swimwear, including our swim shorts, is rated UPF50+.
How much swimwear should I pack for a one-week beach holiday?
Two sets per person, so one can dry while the other is worn. For younger children, a third set is rarely wasted. Add a rash guard for anyone spending long stretches in the water.
Is matching family swimwear available for babies?
Yes. Sandbar prints run across baby, kids', women's and men's styles, so a baby swimsuit can match a parent's swim shorts or one piece exactly.
How does Sandbar's ocean plastic programme work?
For every item sold, Sandbar funds the removal of 1kg of ocean plastic through Seven Clean Seas and Tidy Ocean, whose local teams in Southeast Asia and South and Central America recover plastic from rivers, mangroves and shorelines.
Pack well, then forget about it
The best holiday swimwear is the kind you stop thinking about the moment you arrive: it protects, it dries, it looks good in every photo, and it does a little good in the world while you are busy doing nothing at all.
