A gift that gives back to the ocean is one that funds measurable ocean work, such as plastic removal or conservation, every time it is bought, and is made well enough to be kept rather than binned by February. The test is simple: the brand should tell you exactly what each purchase pays for, who does the work, and where you can see the running total. If it cannot answer those three questions, it is a nice story, not a gift that gives back.
GivingTuesday falls on Tuesday 1 December this year, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and a few days after Black Friday. It started in 2012 at the 92nd Street Y in New York as a counterweight to the shopping weekend, and it has grown into something rather large: the GivingTuesday Data Commons estimates that Americans gave $4.0 billion on the day in 2025, with 38.1 million people taking part. Which raises a fair question for anyone with a Christmas list to finish. If you are going to buy things anyway, can the things themselves do some good?
When is GivingTuesday 2026?
Tuesday 1 December 2026. It always lands on the Tuesday after US Thanksgiving, so it follows Black Friday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November. For most families it also marks the point where Christmas shopping stops being theoretical.
That timing is useful. It is early enough to give gifts some thought, and late enough that you know who is coming for Christmas and who is going somewhere warm.
How much plastic actually ends up in the ocean?
More than most people assume. According to the UN Environment Programme, between 19 and 23 million tonnes of plastic waste leaks into lakes, rivers and seas every year. UNEP also warns that, without meaningful action, the amount entering aquatic ecosystems could nearly triple by 2040.
The important word there is rivers. A great deal of ocean plastic does not start at the beach. It travels down rivers and through mangroves first, which is why the most effective clean-up work often happens upstream, before plastic reaches open water and becomes far harder to recover.
How can you tell if a gift really gives back?
"Gives back" is one of those phrases that can mean a great deal or almost nothing. A percentage of profits, a donation "to ocean causes", a tree planted somewhere unspecified: none of these are wrong, but they are hard to check. Here is a short test worth applying before you hand over your card.
| What to ask | A vague answer | A good answer |
|---|---|---|
| What does each purchase pay for? | "A portion of proceeds supports the ocean" | A fixed, measurable unit per item, such as 1kg of plastic removed |
| Who does the work? | "Our partners" | Named organisations, with named regions |
| Where does it happen? | "Around the world" | Specific places: rivers, mangroves, shorelines |
| Can you see the total? | Not published | A running total you can check |
| Is the product itself any good? | Made to be bought, not worn | Made from recycled materials and built to last for years |
That last row matters more than it looks. A gift that funds a clean-up but falls apart after two holidays has simply moved the problem around. The most generous thing a gift can do for the ocean is stay out of the bin.
How does Sandbar's ocean plastic programme work?
For every item sold, we fund the removal of 1kg of ocean plastic through our partners Seven Clean Seas and Tidy Ocean. Both employ local teams in Southeast Asia and South and Central America, who recover plastic from rivers, mangroves and shorelines before it reaches open water.
We like this model for two reasons. First, it is measurable: one item, one kilogram, no maths in small print. Second, it supports local communities with paid work as well as removing plastic, which makes the clean-up something people can build a living around rather than a weekend volunteer effort. You can follow the running total on our Ocean Impact page.
What makes a good ocean-friendly gift for a family?
In our admittedly biased view, the best ones tick four boxes:
- It gets used. Swimwear for a Christmas trip, a February half term or next summer is about as certain to be worn as a gift gets.
- It is made from recycled materials. Every Sandbar piece is made from recycled fibres. Our men's and boys' swim shorts are woven, non-stretch REPREVE recycled polyester, made from recycled plastic bottles. Our women's swimwear is recycled nylon.
- It protects the people wearing it. All of our swimwear is rated UPF50+, swim shorts included, which matters rather a lot when small children are involved.
- It lasts. Our embroidered prints are machine-embroidered into the fabric before it is cut, not printed on top, so the texture is still there long after the novelty of the wrapping paper has gone.
Which Sandbar gifts give back?
Every item we sell comes with 1kg of ocean plastic removed. A few that tend to go down well:
For the man who claims he does not need anything
He probably does not need another jumper. Our embroidered swim shorts are the ones people ask about at the pool, and the Embroidered Turtle Mens Swim Shorts are a fitting choice for an ocean-minded gift. For something less ornate, browse the full range of men's swim shorts.
For fathers and sons who already argue about the same things
Give them something to agree on. The Father & Son Embroidered Turtle set puts the same print on both, and there are more pairings in our father and son swim shorts.
For mothers and daughters
Our mother and daughter sets match in print without looking like a uniform. The women's pieces are recycled nylon with four-way stretch, so they move and stay put.
For the whole family, all at once
Our prints run from baby sizes up to adults, so everyone can wear the same motif on the same beach. Good taste runs in the family, and our full family matching range is where to prove it. Five matching pieces means 5kg of plastic removed, which is a rather better return than the average Christmas jumper.
For people whose sizes you would rather not guess
The Ocean Gift Card arrives by email and lets them choose. If you would rather wrap something, our recycled gift box is made from recycled materials and fits three to four pieces of swimwear. Or browse the full gifting collection.
Is it better to just donate directly?
Sometimes, yes, and we would never talk anyone out of giving to a charity they believe in. GivingTuesday exists for exactly that. But the two are not in competition. A direct donation is a gift to a cause. A gift that gives back is a present for someone you love that also happens to do some work in the world. If you were going to buy the present anyway, it may as well pull its weight.
The honest caveat: no swimsuit saves the ocean on its own. Buying fewer, better things and keeping them for years does more than any single purchase. We would simply rather the things you do buy are made from recycled fibres, last a long time and come with a kilogram of plastic taken out of a river.
Frequently asked questions
What is a gift that gives back to the ocean?
It is a gift where each purchase funds measurable ocean work, such as removing plastic or supporting conservation. The best ones say exactly what each purchase pays for, name the organisations doing the work and publish a running total.

Is swimwear a good Christmas gift?
For anyone with a winter sun trip, a half term getaway or a summer holiday on the calendar, it is one of the few gifts that is almost guaranteed to be worn. Matching family swimwear also tends to be kept and handed down, which makes it a gift with a long life.
A present that does a little more
The best gifts are the ones people use, keep and remember. If yours can also take a kilogram of plastic out of a river on the way, so much the better. Explore our gifting collection online, or visit our flagship store at Tanglin Mall in Singapore to see the embroidery up close.
